Doom RPG

Starts at $1.99; prices may vary
JamDat Mobile

The Doom RPG takes the classic, genre-defining desktop shooter of 1993 and turns it into a tiny, turn-based role-playing game. This may seem odd, but developer Fountainhead makes it work. The Doom RPG is a satisfying foray into the world of Doom, building on the story of the original game with elements taken from the more recently released Doom 3.

You play the role of an unnamed space marine, arriving at a Mars station where a matter teleporter seems to have opened a gateway to hell, spewing forth demons and other critters for you to blast while searching for keycards to navigate the station. Although Doom RPG looks like it’s 1990’s progenitor, it’s a turn-based game. Much of the game still consists of navigating narrow corridors and blasting demons with an arsenal of weaponry containing nine different weapons derived from the Doom catalog, including classics such as the rocket launcher, the BFG, and the super shotgun to name but a few. You’ll also need to use health packs to stay alive, and you’ll level-up and become stronger as you gain experience from killing enemies. Some nice touches include music and sound bytes taken from the original Doom.

Duke Nukem Mobile 3D

$2.99

It’s tough to mention the name Duke Nukem anymore without making a smart-alec remark about Duke Nukem Forever, a PC game that has been in development since before the Mesozoic but has yet to materialize. Regardless of his bigger sibling’s failing, Duke Nukem lives on through this tiny cousin to the original PC shooter.

The original Duke Nukem Mobile game is a side-scrolling action game, but in Duke Nukem 3D, Mobile Duke returns to his 3D shooter roots. Duke Nukem Mobile 3D is essentially a mini version of the original PC shooter. The graphics are excellent, and enemies (such as the classic “pig cop” from the original PC shooter) all move very smoothly.

Mobile 3D Duke also uses many of the key taglines spouted by the original Duke, such as “It’s payback time!” or “Damn, I’m good!” Despite the limitations of clunky handset controls (a challenge for any mobile game), the game plays reasonably well and packs a good challenge into its 21 levels. (A good player can probably finish the game in under two hours on the normal difficulty.) If you’re looking for a snazzy mobile 3D shooter, “Come get some!” (as Duke would say).

Call Of Duty Mobile

$2.39 to $5.19

Call Of Duty is arguably the best WWII shooter ever released for the PC, and it’s mobile cousin holds up well in translation.

Call Of Duty mobile is a scrolling, objective-based shooter in which you command a squad of men in a variety of battles, including D-Day and the Battle For Berlin. In each mission you command a three-man squad through an objective-based mission. Potential squad members include Infantry, who can throw grenades; Medics, who can heal other units; Engineers, who can plant explosives; Snipers for long-range shooting; and Squad Commanders, who are just flat out tougher than other units.

You can move, fire, and throw grenades in eight directions. Bullets are unlimited, but grenades are not. You have three lives with which to complete the game and you can pick up medkits as you move through the mission to keep you and your squad alive.

Call Of Duty Mobile is basically a strategy-based action shooter. It offers enough strategy to keep the virtual generals happy, but doesn’t skimp on action, either.
